Emusic
(or: How I Download Legitimate MP3s Legally And Learn About New Bands)

Emusic.com costs about $10 per month with a yearly subscription, totalling $120.00 per year. $120 per year and you can grab tons of MP3s, know that you're helping out The Artists, and basically preview bands before giving the RIAA your hard-earned money.

Of course, being that most people grab MP3s because they're fucking cheap bastards who hate paying for things, this probably means nothing to 90% of you. if you're one of those people, please put a plastic bag over your head. oooh, or, better yet, please volunteer to be nuclear reactor shielding. that way the rest of us won't have to put up with your equally whiny offspring (who will inevitably resort to welfare and foodstamps while squeezing out kids on a daily basis).

For the people that don't mind paying for decent things, i highly recommend emusic. below are some of the bands i've "discovered" via emusic. if you like the same sort of music i do, you'll more than likely orgasm when listening to some of the following:

  • Mogwai: Indie-pop. Good stuff if you're also a fan of Cornershop and Soul Coughing, or just need something to chill with.

  • Assemblage 23: Similar to VNV Nation and Covenant. A lot like Covenant, in fact. Industrial synth. 'Failure' was great.

  • Fektion Fekler: Good industrial.

  • Gridlock: GREAT noise/industrial. Sickness from their first album is TEH WIN!@#

  • Kalte Farben: More great industrial! 'Trust', which Emusic lacks, was incredible.

  • THD: Total Harmonic DISTORTION. stupid emusic. Anyway, good industrial, good vocals. plus i run their site.

  • Pulse Legion: Surprisingly good industrial, early-haujobb-esque.

  • Thom Brennan: Atmospheric synths and rhythms. Good stuff.

  • Sasha & John Digweed: Sasha. 'nuff said.

  • Pendragon Records: Anything on Pendragon Records has been really, really, really good.

  • Velvet Acid Christ: I may hate (really more of a despise-sort of feeling) the guy, but he puts out good music.

  • Front Line Assembly: If you haven't heard of Bill Leeb, you must be a dork.

  • Haujobb: GREAT synth industrial, prophetic lyrics... all around good stuff. Just don't get Ninety Nine or Less and you'll be fine.

  • Covenant: Great industrial. I highly recommend Sequencer. Similar to VNV Nation. Kindof darkwave synth.

  • Front 242: Legendary EBM.

  • Wumpscut: Rudy machen der guten stuff. Or something.

  • Apoptygma Berzerk: Industrial dance/EBM stuff from overseas. cheesy lyrics, good music.

  • Decoded Feedback: Darkwave industrial reminiscent of In Strict Confidence or early XMTP.

  • Pigface: Like I need to say anything about Pigface. Cmon now.

  • William S. Burroughs. If you don't know who he is, well... you're sad.

  • Jello Biafra, of The Dead Kennedy's, Pigface, Lard, and lots, lots more. Spoken word.

  • Noam Chomsky

  • Yeht Mae: interesting industrial.

More to come...
